Amberg, Deutschland

Amberg..located in the Upper Palatine region of Bayern, home to a population of approximately 41,000 residents. Amberg was first menton in records in the year 1034 as Ammenberg. Amberg also has a history with the US Army..as it was part of the American Sector after WWII, the city hosted Ponds Barracks until 1992 when the location was returned to the city and the barracks closed. In 1796 Amberg was a site of a major battle during the French Revolutionary Wars, and in the Middle Ages was a trading center for iron ore. The city center was a site to bee but it was when I stepped outside of the shopping area that I found a wonderful trail along the River Vilswith lilypads, ducks playing, folks walking their pups..that I really started enjoying the day..it was like a breath of fresh air but with everything within a stone's throw..once back into the main shopping area I found some great side streets with some individually owned shops full of regional items and super nice folks.

Weiden, Deutschland

On this trip we are visiting Weiden in der Oberpfalz..or as you will find on the maps here Weiden i.d.OPf...this took me a minute to figure out so wanted to pass this on to all of you who are not residents of Deutschland..this jem of a small city is located 100 km east of Nürnberg and just 35 km west of the Czech border..Weiden is home to part of the Deutsch Bundeswehr as well as having a link to the US Army.
Weiden was first mentioned in historical records in 1242, became a trading center in 1531, and in 1863 was joined to the german railroad network..today Weiden has approximately 41,800 residents.
Places to see in Weiden are of course the Marktplatz with it's numerous cafes and shops, the Altes Rathaus..pictured above, the Stadpfarrkirche St. Michael, & the St. Sebastian Kirche. This post includes photos from 2 different visits to Weiden..one in May and one in July..a great place to spend the day..very laid back and relaxed..but with plenty to do.
